8.24.25 TRUSTING THE COVENANT: Permission to Wrestle

Rev. Dr. Dedric Cowser • August 18, 2025

Job 42:1-6, Job 1:1, 6-12

Dear Trinity Family & Friends,

Sometimes faith doesn’t feel neat. Sometimes faith feels like a wrestling match—full of questions, doubt, grief, and even anger.

This Sunday, we continue our Trusting the Covenant series with a message entitled “Permission to Wrestle.” Our guide is Job, a man who had every reason to walk away from his faith, but instead chose to engage God honestly, fully, and relentlessly.

In Job 1, we’re introduced to a man who is blameless and upright and then suddenly thrust into unimaginable suffering. By Job 42, he’s still standing. Not because he received easy answers, but because he dared to bring his questions to God.

What we learn from Job is this: God can handle our questions. God doesn’t need us to perform faith; God invites us to live it. And that means giving ourselves permission to wrestle with pain, with mystery, with God himself.

Trusting the covenant doesn’t mean pretending everything is okay. It means remaining in relationship even when the answers don’t come, even when life doesn’t make sense.

As we prepare for worship, I invite you to consider: What are you wrestling with right now? And could it be that the wrestling itself is a sign of trust?

Small Group Discussion Questions:

  1. How does the story of Job challenge your understanding of what it means to be faithful?
  2. When have you felt permission to be honest with God about your pain, questions, or confusion?
  3. What’s the difference between walking away from God and wrestling with God? Why does it matter?
  4. How might God be using your current struggle not to punish you—but to draw you into deeper relationship?

If you’re feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or even angry right now—you are not alone. This Sunday is for you. Join us as we discover that even in the wrestling, God is near.

See you Sunday!

Pastor Dedric
