6.15.25 Living the Covenant: A Reoriented Life

Rev. Carrie Jones • June 9, 2025

Luke 4:14-21, Acts 10:34-48

Dear Trinity Family & Friends,

This Sunday, we continue our journey through Living the Covenant with a message titled “A Reoriented Life.” As we step into Episode 10 of our Covenant series—The Spirit-Led Community—we’ll explore how the Holy Spirit transforms not just individuals, but entire communities. In covenant life, we don’t just receive the Spirit—we are reoriented by it. We become people who think differently, see differently, and act differently in the world.

In Luke 4, Jesus returns to his hometown synagogue and reads from Isaiah:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me…

to bring good news to the poor…

to proclaim release to the captives…

to let the oppressed go free…”

This is Jesus’ mission statement. And it becomes ours, too. Through the power of the Spirit, we are sent to embody this good news—to proclaim, to liberate, and to heal.

We also look to Acts 10, where Peter is sent to the home of Cornelius, a Gentile. In a stunning moment of divine disruption, the Holy Spirit falls on everyone gathered—Jew and Gentile alike—reminding us that God shows no partiality. The covenant family is bigger than we ever imagined.

This is the work of the Spirit: to widen the circle, to break down barriers, and to invite us into relationships that challenge our comfort and expand our vision. To live the covenant is to embrace a reoriented life—one led by the Spirit and guided by radical inclusion, courageous witness, and divine love.

As you prepare for worship this Sunday, consider:

  • Where is the Spirit sending you?
  • What old boundaries are being redefined?
  • What new relationships is God calling you into?

Day 7: Group Meeting Experience with Luke 4:14-30

Small Group Discussion Questions:

  1. Jesus’ words in Luke 4 lay out a bold vision of mission and justice. What part of his mission statement resonates most with you today—and why?
  2. In Acts 10, Peter has to let go of some long-held assumptions. Have you ever had a moment when the Holy Spirit reoriented your thinking or expanded your understanding of God’s work?
  3. What does it mean to be a Spirit-led community in today’s world? How can we at Trinity embody that kind of covenant life?
  4. Who are the “unexpected people” in your life or neighborhood that God might be calling you to reach out to with love, service, or witness?

This week, may we open our hearts to the Spirit’s movement. Let’s allow ourselves to be surprised, stretched, and sent—because the good news of Jesus is for everyone, and the covenant life is wide enough to welcome all.

I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday!

Blessings,

Pastor Carrie
