6.21.26 SOUL CARE: Hope When Life Falls Apart

Rev. Dedric Cowser • June 15, 2026

1 Kings 17:17–24, Psalm 30:1–5

 Trinity Family & Friends,

This Sunday, we continue our series Soul Care with the message “Faith in the Valley of Grief” based on 1 Kings 17:17–24. This passage interrupts the miracle story we might expect. After God’s dramatic provision through the widow’s flour and oil, tragedy still enters the household. The widow’s son becomes ill and dies, forcing both Elijah and the widow to wrestle honestly with grief, confusion, and questions about God’s presence.

The opening chapters of Elijah’s story continue to unfold during a season of drought, fear, and uncertainty. Yet even after witnessing God’s provision, the widow is still confronted with deep pain and loss. Scripture reminds us that faith does not shield us from sorrow. Even those who trust God deeply will walk through seasons that feel heavy, confusing, and heartbreaking.

What stands out in this story is Elijah’s honesty before God. He does not offer shallow answers or pretend everything is fine. Instead, he cries out in grief and desperation. Biblical faith makes room for lament. Throughout Scripture, people of faith bring their confusion, sorrow, anger, and heartbreak honestly before God.

Soul care sometimes means learning that God remains present not only in moments of joy and victory, but also in valleys of grief and uncertainty. Faith does not deny sorrow; it trusts that God is still near even when life feels fragile and difficult to understand.

Reflect and Prepare:

  1. Why do suffering and grief often create spiritual questions?
  2. What stands out to you about Elijah’s honesty before God?
  3. How does this story challenge shallow understandings of faith?
  4. Why is lament such an important part of Scripture?
  5. What does Psalm 30 teach about grief and hope existing together?
  6. How can Christian community better support people in seasons of loss?

Our world often encourages people to hide grief, move on quickly, or pretend everything is okay. Scripture invites us into something deeper, honesty, compassion, and the reminder that God remains faithful even in sorrow. May we continue learning how to care for our souls and for one another with gentleness and grace.

Blessings,

Pastor Dedric
