12.14.25 HEAVEN BREAKS THROUGH Expectations with Joy

Rev. Dr. Dedric Cowser • December 8, 2025

Luke 1:26-38, 46-56

Dear Trinity Family & Friends,

Sometimes life feels scripted. Expectations are laid out for us: what we should do, who we should be, and how the future is supposed to unfold. But often, God has something more in mind.

This Sunday, we continue our Advent series Heaven Breaks Through with a message entitled “Heaven Breaks Through Expectations with Joy.” Our guide is Mary, a young woman whose life path seemed ordinary and predictable. She would marry, raise a family, and live a quiet life in her village. But then Gabriel appeared with a message that would change everything: she would bear the Son of God.

What’s striking about Mary is not her circumstances, but her response. Unlike Zechariah, she did not dismiss the angel’s message. Though surprised, she believed the impossible was possible with God. Her words, “Here I am, let it be with me according to your word,” show a faith that embraces God’s greater vision over human expectation. And in her song, “the Magnificat,” Mary bursts into joy, celebrating the God who lifts up the lowly and fulfills His promises.

What we learn from Mary is this: joy is not found in everything going as planned, but in trusting that God’s possibilities are greater than our expectations.

As we prepare for worship, I invite you to consider:

  1. Where might God be inviting you to release your expectations? And what new joy might be waiting when you trust His possibilities?
  2. How do Mary’s circumstances highlight the difference between human expectations and God’s possibilities?
  3. Why do you think Mary responded with belief and trust instead of doubt?
  4. What does Mary’s song (Luke 1:46–56) reveal about the source of true joy?
  5. Where in your life might God be breaking through expectations with new joy?

If you feel weighed down by the pressure of expectations—your own or others’—this Sunday is for you. Join us as we discover that heaven’s joy is greater than any plan we could make.

See you Sunday!
