The reconciliation that God effected through Christ involves personal, social, and civic righteousness.  As part of your Christ-centered faith formation process, you can look to your church to provide guidance on decisions that you have to make every day.

Knowledge in this area can help bring the whole of your life and the world in which you live into conformity with the will of God.

We are called to this effort via “Our Theological Task” (United Methodist Church Discipline):   “As United Methodists, we are called to identify the needs both of individuals, and of society, and to address those needs out of the resources of Christian faith in a way that is clear, convincing, and effective.”

We are guided in this effort by “Our Theological Task” in the discussion of scripture, tradition, experience, and reason.

Trinity’s Church and Society team offers fascinating sessions on the church, our society, and how they mix.  Topics include:

United Methodist History

·      Learn the history of our church, its founder John Wesley, and how his theology still applies to us over 200 years later.

Social Principles

·      What are the social guidelines (yes, we have them) of the United Methodist Church and how should they inform our lives?

Book of Resolutions

·      The denomination’s best kept secret!  The United Methodist General Conference passes resolutions that are published in The Book of Resolutions, which, along with the Social Principles, form the foundation for United Methodist involvement in social issues.

Predatory Lending

·      This session will shine the light of Gospel upon some parts of society we tend to ignore.  What does God want us to do to help protect the least, the last, and the lost from loan fraud?

Creation Care

·      What is our responsibility, as a church and its members, for the ways in which we use and abuse God’s creation?  God has granted us stewardship, which carries with it special duties.

Tax Reform

·      Find out what the United Methodist Church says about existing tax structures. (Hint: the word ‘revision’ figures prominently.)

Constitutional Reform

·      What’s wrong with Alabama ’s constitution?  And what can we do about it to create a better future for our state?  Hear from AL Citizens for Constitutional Reform (ACCR) members.

Annual Conference Overview

·      Get the word straight from Trinity’s representatives to the North Alabama annual conference.  This session will let you in on the ins, outs, ups, and downs of this yearly United Methodist event.

“There are churches which believe that Christians should ‘stick to saving souls and stay out of politics.’  We United Methodists are not one of those churches.  Not that we take partisan political stands, but rather that we believe that Christ calls us to witness to our faith in every area of our lives.”
- Bishop Will Willimon, Why Am I a United Methodist?
